How many jobs could the U.S. create in 4 years by investing heavily in solar and wind energy alternatives?

The book "Project New America" puts great stock in alternative energy investments for lifting the country out of the recession. Here's a link if you'd like to review it yourself: http://www.sitenet.com/books/NewAmerica/New%20America%207.pdf. How well do you believe this could work?
I would prefer they invest in Nuclear Power. It is more reliable, works in all climate areas, less environmental impact area, and cheaper power.
Nothing wrong with Solar and Wind, they are just not as cost effective and efficient.

do we do things to just create jobs even if the return is not justified?i think not.

I do belive it can work. My family owns a farm in Oregon that they are putting turbines on and I have seen how mony people are involved in this process. To extrapolate out the number of people to achieve energy independence would be amazing.

I think there is some limited opportunity to create jobs in teh solar and wind sector. It works a couple ways. If we can get american consumers to put solar panels on their houses instead of spending their money to buy things from China, we keep money in the US. Also, there is bound to be some small advantage regarding a reduced demand for foreign oil.
These technologies, however, only have a real payback in a couple edge cases, such as remote power generation. Total number of jobs created - number of jobs lost, maybe a couple thousand, at best. But it could accumulate. That is, we might generate two thousand jobs the first year, and a thousand more the next year, and 500 more the next two years. At the end, we would have 4000 net jobs created.

A few in R&D, the technology isn't well enough developed. Just think how many jobs would be created if we started drilling our oil and opening nuclear power plants.

Obama thinks we can create 5 million new green collar jobs by investing in technologies like solar and wind.
"Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future."

Through ammonia, cheap wind energy is absolutely possible even if it needs a good initial investment to get great quantities of hydrogen and directly produce ammonia…
So these investments are much competitive…

construction jobs? many. but if we doubled the amount of wind energy in this country (currently about 1%) we would not make much difference.Solar is a lot less than that. With the addition of more of either, we need natural gas plants or similar to run when there is no wind or it is cloudy or dark.even nuke plants are not the answer to offset them because of the startup lead-lag time of a nuke plant. You need an almost instant supply of wood pulp nat. gas or deisel/makeup power. So since you would have to double the availible generation capabilities, you would create many construction jobs.

I've been in construction for 25+ years it would be wonderful for the economy.
