If you mean electricity generated by solar photovoltaic cells, that is very expensive.

A typical 3000 watt system for a house costs approximately $30,000 installed.

The system will produce approximately 4,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year.

If you finance the system with a second mortgage on your home, you will probably get an interest rate equal to the prime rate which is currently 8.25%

The annual interest cost of the system will be $2,475.

Your interest cost per kilowatt hour of electricity will be 61.88 cents per kilowatt hour. That does not include maintanance or depreciation of the system which adds to the cost.

This is a very expensive way to generate electricity.

However if you have an extra $30,000 in cash or are willing to pay an interest cost of $2,475 per year or an extra $206.25 per month to produce approximately 333 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, be my guest. Go for it.

If you cannot afford the cost however, I recommend that you pass on the opportunity.
